The Fall of Shane Dawson

For my Social Media Etiquette project, it was easy to pick a YouTuber that I was once obsessed with, Shane Dawson. Before completing this project, I was vaguely familiar with the various times he had been canceled online, along with his responses to viewers calling him out for it. However, I took this project as an opportunity to dive deeper into the details of his cancellations. With that being said, what I can take away now from Shane Dawson is that he is quite disgusting as a human being, and I am now uncomfortable with the fact that I spent the majority of my pre-teen and adolescent years consuming content from him.

I explain some of the specifications of why Shane Dawson was canceled in my video-formatted presentation, but if you guys are interested in finding out the extent of how far his cancellations go, I would recommend researching it yourself. There are numerous instances where Shane Dawson portrays Racism, pedophilia, Homophobia, and sometimes Zoophilia.

When it comes to Shane Dawson's Digital footprint now, many of the videos containing these horrific things are deleted from the surface of the internet, but can be found through a deeper search. This emphasizes the idea that once you post something on social media, it will stay there forever, whether you enjoy it or not. It is important to post with intent and with respect. Obviously, this was not going through Shane Dawson’s head during the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Shane posted three separate apology videos to his fans over the course of his career, with only one being the most sincere and accurate. If Shane was intent on his postings, He would only have had to post one. Yes, people make mistakes, and it is more evident if you are an internet persona like Shane; however, the doings in his past are so extensive that there will never be a real “comeback” from his past actions. Overall, I enjoyed researching this topic, and I apologize for the length of my video presentation. I felt it was rather necessary to point out why Shane Dawson got canceled, and there was extensive evidence showcasing how bad his social media etiquette really was.

  1. Hi Emily, I also was unfortunately a Shane Dawson fans for quite a few years of my childhood. I wasn't on YouTube when he posted the videos that originally sparked the controversy down the road, so I had no idea how awful he was until years into watching his content. I completely agree that he did not mean his apologies as none of them were truly sincere and he has made no effort to actually become a better person.

  2. Hi Emily!
I was never a fan of Shane Dawson myself, but heard of the upsetting posts and comments he has made on social media. It is important for everyone to understand that our posts can be deleted, but they truly last forever under your name. I also found it hurtful that he had multiple channels making this inappropriate and racial content. It is truly saddening that creators with such large followings choose to promote the wrong messages to their fan bases. Even though he "apologized," I feel his actions mean more than his words. Great presentation!

  3. Hey Emily! I was a big fan of of Shane Dawson growing up, but I wasn't aware of his old videos when I was. When everything resurfaced, it was an instant unfollow/unsubscribe for me. I've seen that recently he has tried to make a comeback, and I think that really says a lot about him as a person. If he truly cared/tried to change, he would stay off of social media. Things like blatant racism dont just go away because time has passed.

  4. Hi Emily! I was a big fan of Shane Dawson growing up and loved watching his YouTube videos. However, when it was brought to light about past comments and actions he has made, I was truly disgusted. I haven't seen or interacted with any of his videos he's made after the truth came out about what kind of person he really is. I feel that in our world of "cancelling," he is one of the influencers who truly was cancelled (thankfully).
